Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red Riding Hood
Plot Summary
The story of Little Red Riding Hood’s battle with the Big-Bad-Wolf is well known. In this pantomime version, Red is joined by a local woodcutter Lennox and his apprentice Baxley, two forest rangers Wibble & Dibble and a backpacker and his animal companion, Boots McHoots & Monty.
When the Spirit of the Forest warns Red’s parents and grandma that the wolf has targeted Red, they all join forces to protect her. Two incompetent foxes, Biff & Griff are tasked with helping the wolf fulfil his desire to capture Little Red Riding Hood because nothing will stop his evil intentions but the arrival of his own mother was definitely not part of his wicked plan.
Approx 2 Hours long
This pantomime has 18 characters
Little Red Riding Hood – Principal Girl. Goes by the name of Red. A plucky, happy go lucky girl. She finds herself to be the focus of the Big-bad-wolf’s evil intentions.
Mister Wolf – The Baddie. A mean, angry wolf who despite having two lacklustre apprentices decides he wants to dine out on Little Red Riding Hood.
Granny Smith – The traditional pantomime dame. Red’s Grandmother. Interaction with audience essential. A strong-willed Granny with a heart of gold.
Lennox – Principal Boy. A local woodcutter, very handy with an axe which comes in very useful when he falls for Little Red Riding Hood and vows to protect her at all costs.
Agnes Crumb – (A medium part) Red’s Mother. Tries her best to keep order in the family but with Red’s stubbornness and her husband’s awful baking, she doesn’t always succeed.
Gideon Crumb – (A medium part) Red’s Father. A kind, gentle soul. Believes himself to be a great baker but unfortunately most of his bakes are disasters.
Baxley – Lennox’s assistant. Comedy part. Lennox’s new apprentice but lacks both Lennox’s courage and work ethics.
Biff & Griff – Foxes. The Wolf’s apprentices but they don’t really have the heart or the enthusiasm to be bad. They are a huge disappointment to the wolf.
Spirit of the Forest – (A small part) A Fairy-type spirit who protects the creatures of the forest. She helps protect Little Red Riding Hood.
Wibble & Dibble – Forest rangers. New to the job. They keep getting lost (it’s a big forest!) but try to assist in saving Little Red Riding Hood in their own comedic way.
Milly Miller (A small/medium part) A friend of Red’s. Uses words mostly beginning with M.
Wilma Wilton (A small/medium part) A friend of Red’s. Uses words mostly beginning with W.
Boots McHoots – A backpacker/camper. Together with his companion Monty he pops up throughout the show interacting with different members of the cast.
Monty – Boots animal companion. This is a ventriloquist puppet carried by actor playing Boots. He is to be voiced offstage.
[Please note – Throughout the pantomime the act of a ventriloquist and his puppet must be maintained. At all times it must look like the Monty is being voiced by Boots. Monty’s mouth to be operated in sync with the words spoken by unseen actor]
The Narrator – Narrates the entire pantomime. Stays seated on stage at all times.
The Wolf’s Mother – A cameo part, only appears at the very end to chastise the wolf and take him home.
Baxley Oh here you are, I’ve been looking for you. A vicious insect has just attacked me. (Rubs his arm) I’m scarred for life.
Red Oh, I’d heard there was a nasty bug going round.
Lennox (to Red) This is my apprentice Baxley.
Red Do you enjoy your job?
Baxley I don’t mind the work. It’s the eight hours wait to go back home that annoys me.
Lennox He just needs a bit more motivation and he’ll be fine.
Baxley I once went on a twelve-week motivational course. Well, I went for the first week.
Red Whatever you do, you should always give one hundred percent.
Baxley Unless you’re giving blood.
Red Actually I’ve always wanted to know, how do lumberjacks know how many trees they’ve cut down?
Lennox We keep a log. (To audience). Get it? Keep a log, we cut down trees? Oh forget it.
Red I’ll go and get my parents so you can meet them.
Red quickly exits. Lennox & Baxley sit on the bench/fallen log.
Baxley She seems nice.
Lennox I think she’s lovely. My heart is busting out of my chest.
Baxley Are you going to ask her out?
Lennox I’d like to.
Baxley Good for you. I’ve recently split up with my girlfriend after going rock climbing with her. She was too clingy.
Granny Smith enters. She’s out of breath.
Granny Oh I’m sure the walk to here gets longer every day. Honestly, if I’d known I was going to live so long, I would have taken better care of myself. (Walks over to Lennox & Baxley) Hello I’m Granny Smith, Red’s Grandma.
Lennox I’m Lennox, the woodcutter and this is my apprentice Baxley.
Granny (points to Baxley, pulls a face) Yeah, we’ve met. I’ve just come from a medical examination. The doctor said my heart, lungs and blood pressure were fine. Then he said (giggly) he wanted to check the part that gets ladies into a whole heap of trouble. (Pause). How was I supposed to know he meant for me to stick out my tongue.
Lennox What happened?
Granny I quickly put my knickers back on and left. Room for a little one?
Baxley (looks offstage) Is Little Red Riding Hood joining us again? (Looks back at Granny). Oh you mean you?
Granny sits between Lennox & Baxley. She grins at Lennox.
Granny Now you’re a handsome man. Can I have a picture so I can show Santa what I want for Christmas?
Baxley He’s sweet on your Granddaughter, so I don’t think you stand a chance. Anyway, you’re far too old for him.
Granny growls at Baxley, he quickly tries to make up for his rudeness.
Baxley But I must say, you look amazing. No one would believe you’re over 75.
Granny I’m 57! (Or whatever actor’s own age is).
Lennox I’d like to ask Red out on a date, do you think that’ll be okay?
Granny She’d be a fool to say no.
