The Little Mermaid
Plot Summary
Marina, the little mermaid longs for adventure but finds life under the sea a little uneventful. When she rescues and falls in love with Milo, a human, she goes against all her friends advise and seeks the help of Sebrina the evil sea witch to make her dream come true. Sebrina grants Marina her wish to be human but tricks her by locking away her voice.
As Milo’s search for his saviour comes to nothing will he realise that Marina is actually his rescuer or will Sebrina’s plan to entrap Milo keep the young lovers apart? When all hope seems lost, Milo alongside his mother and father, his friend Nelson and loyal servant Cavendish together with Marina’s friends Gilly & Tootle, sister’s Alexa and Coral and her father King Neptune join forces in a desperate fight against time to save Marina from becoming Sebrina’s slave.
Approx. 2 hours long.
The pantomime has 17 characters plus dancers/chorus
Marina – Principal girl and The Little Mermaid. Marina’s life dramatically changes when she rescues and falls in love with a human. She longs to leave the safety of life under the sea to be with Milo. Sebrina grants Marina her wish to be human but tricks her into locking away her voice.
Prince Milo – Principal boy. Milo falls in love with the mysterious girl who saves him from drowning after her voice brings him back to life. When he meets Marina, he fails to realise she is his saviour. Agrees to marry her Sebrina after she uses a spell on him.
Sophia, The Duchess of Hanswick –The Dame and Milo’s mother. A traditional pantomime dame. Her only wish is for Milo to marry. She is surprised when he announces he’s to marry Sebrina, instead of the lovely mute girl who everyone has fallen in love with.
Benedict, The Duke of Hanswick – The Prince’s Father and the dame’s mild-tempered husband.
Sebrina – The Baddie. A multi tentacled sea witch. Gleefully agrees to help Marina become human to avenge King Neptune after he banished her years before. Tricks Marina by stealing her voice which she then uses to lure Milo.
Salty & Briny – Sebrina’s incompetent assistants. There are eel-like creatures who together help Sebrina with her evil deeds.
King Neptune – Marina’s Father. King of the sea. He loves his daughters but struggles to keep his youngest daughter Marina under control. Becomes frantic when Marina goes missing, taking the drastic step of going ashore to rescue her.
Gilly & Tootle Marina’s friends – Gilly, a fish and Tootle, a turtle are comedy roles, interaction with audience essential. Together they accompany Marina on her adventures but fail to protect her from Sebrina’s evil clutches.
Coral – Marina’s older sister. A snooty, do-gooder who shamelessly tries to curry favour with her father at all times to the disgust of Marina and Alexa.
Alexa – Marina’s sister. Tries to be a good friend and sister to Marina but can’t understand Marina’s obsession with all things human. She’s baffled why everybody keeps asking her questions all the time.
Claude – Neptune’s courtier, a crab. Tries his best to keep order after King Neptune is called away on business.
Dexter – Milo’s dog, a loyal canine. A non-speaking part but is essential to the story.
Cavendish – A put upon servant to the royal family.
Nelson – A comedy part. A friend of Prince Milo who inadvertently is responsible for Milo and Marina meeting. Tries to be a good friend but fails on most occasions.
Jacob – A villager who helps in the search for Milo’s mystery girl and shows the dame the local village where much confusion arises.
Chorus dressed as villagers all enter. They are excited and chatter loudly.
Sophia (pointing to villagers) It’s very busy.
Jacob Yes, they’re all here because a local has been arrested.
Sophia Who’s been arrested?
Jacob Brown Paper Eric.
Sophia Why is he called Brown Paper Eric?
Jacob Because he wears a brown paper hat, brown paper shirt, brown paper trousers, brown paper shoes and a brown paper belt.
Sophia What’s he been arrested for?
Jacob Rustling.
Milo, Benedict & Nelson enter.
Sophia Milo, should you be out and about?
Milo I’m fine, stop worrying.
Benedict We’ve been round every house in the village looking for Milo’s mysterious saviour.
Sophia Any luck?
Milo (despondent) No, nothing.
Nelson He’s dragged us through the entire village, we’ve walked miles. My feet are killing me. The village is very old and decrepit. It was like stepping back in time. Rather reminds me of what (name a rival town) looks like now.
Jacob Do you mind, that’s my home town you’re disrespecting there.
Nelson Sorry. Have you lived here all your life?
Jacob Not yet.
Benedict I don’t think you’re going to find her. Maybe you did just imagine her.
Milo (frustrated) I didn’t! She was real. I didn’t imagine that sweet, harmonious singing voice, did I?
Benedict Well I don’t know, dear boy. I wasn’t there.
Jacob I’m telling you, she’s not from round here. No one in our village can sing. We started a choir but we had to disband after only one rehearsal. It turned out singing in key was a basic requirement.
Milo I’m not giving up! You go back to the castle if you want, I’m going to continue the search.
Nelson Look, I’m your best friend so if you want to keep searching then you know where I’ll be. (He looks to Milo, Milo slaps Nelson on the back and nods). Back at the castle putting my feet up. (Milo is disappointed). Pleaseeeeeee, can we just have a rest, I’m begging you. If we carry on walking, I’m afraid I’ll have no choice but to sue you for wilful and malicious damage.
Milo (aghast) What have I damaged?
Nelson My feet. I’ve got blisters on top of blisters! (He turns to Jacob). Have you got a criminal lawyer in the village?
Jacob Yes, but we can’t prove it!
