Jack and the Beanstalk
Jack and the Beanstalk
Jack and the Beanstalk
Plot Summary
The story of Jack and the Beanstalk has long been a traditional pantomime tale and a much-loved family favourite. This version includes all the well-known characters plus a few new ones.
Dame Spriggott lives with her two sons Jack and Jimbo. When the dame tells Jack to sell their beloved cow to earn much needed cash, the last thing she expects is for him to bring home a bag of magic beans. From the magic beans a beanstalk grows leading Jack & Jimbo to a castle in the sky, the home of a terrifying giant and his wife. With the help of 3 goblins, Jack & Jimbo rescue Ebony, who has been held captive and try to return home before the giant can capture them. It seems an impossible task to escape the clutches of a very hungry giant who loves nothing more than the blood of an English man?
Approx. 2 hours long.
The pantomime has 15/16 characters plus dancers/chorus
Jack Spriggott – Principal Boy. Dame Spriggott’s eldest son. A brave, heroic boy who will stop at nothing to rescue Ebony from the giant’s evil clutches.
Dame Spriggott – Traditional pantomime dame, usually played a man. Mother to Jack and Jimbo. Has recently caught the eye of Scruffy McDuff and relishes in at long last being a desirable woman. Audience participation required.
Ebony – Principal Girl. Held captive by the terrifying giant and his evil wife. She is rescued by Jack & Jimbo and immediately makes a connection with Jack. Singing required.
Wart The Giant – (Body & Voice played separately) The giant needs to be 7/8 feet tall at least. This can be achieved by the actor playing the giant wearing a false head and shoulders that is worn on the actor’s own shoulders giving the impression the giant is tall or hire a giant costume from a pantomime hire costume company. The voice needs to be projected from offstage using a microphone or voice sound effect to give a booming menacing voiceover.
Verruca – The giant’s human wife. Very nasty, takes great delight in pleasing her husband and being evil.
Winnie the Moo – A cow. Played by two people in costume. None speaking role.
Professor Prospero – A small part. A medicine man who travels around with a hand-held cart. He gives Jack the Magic Beans in exchange for his cow.
Jimbo – Jack’s not so bright brother. Reluctantly climbs the beanstalk after Jack and later helps rescue Ebony. Comedy role.
Henrietta the Golden Hen – A small part. The giant’s prized possession because she lays golden eggs. Takes a shine to Jimbo and follows him home, much to the annoyance of the giant. None speaking role.
Slugworth – The chief goblin. The goblins live in the enchanted wood near the giant’s castle. Slugworth has the awkward job of keeping Hogroach & Beadlebug in line.
Hogroach – A goblin. Can be grumpy and takes great pleasure in making a fool out of Beadlebug.
Beadlebug – A goblin. The daftest of the three.
Scruffy McDuff – A local gamekeeper and madly in love with Dame Spriggott.
Caspar – Scruffy McDuff’s assistant. He is naïve and idiotic young lad.
Dame Jimbo, Jack is going to show you how to milk Winnie the Moo.
Jimbo Oh I already know.
Dame (delighted) You do? Oh that’s wonderful. (To Jack) You see, he’s not completely stupid.
Jack Just a bit, then?
(Jack collects a stool and a bucket, he hands them to Jimbo. Jimbo puts the bucket at the rear of Winnie underneath her tail).
Jimbo Milking a cow is easy, you just do this.
(Jimbo pumps Winnie’s tail up and down.)
Dame No, no, you’re doing it all wrong. You need to put the bucket under Winnie’s udder.
Jimbo Other what?
Dame Not other what, her udder. You put the bucket under her udders.
Jimbo Huh?
Dame Udders, under … oh never mind. (She points to Winnie’s udders). Put the bucket there.
(Jimbo puts the bucket under Winnie).
Jack Now you need to squeeze the udder.
Jimbo (disgusted) I can’t do that.
Jack Well if you want to milk Winnie, you’ll have to. That’s how you milk a cow.
Jimbo (pulling a face) That’s disgusting.
Jack Just get on with it.
(Jimbo reluctantly bends down and with his eyes closed tries to squeeze Winnie’s udders. He can’t reach. Stands up straight.)
Jimbo It’s no good, I can’t reach.
Jack That’s why we have the stool. You put the stool here. (He places the stool next to Winnie). And then you sit down and can reach the udders easily.
(Jimbo sits on the stool, grimacing he touches Winnie’s udders. Winnie jumps knocking Jimbo off the stool)
Effect 5
(A loud Moo)
(Jack and Dame Spriggott laugh. Jimbo is upset and gets up slowly).
Jimbo What did she do that for?
Jack You forgot to warm your hands. Winnie doesn’t like cold hands.
Jimbo Well you could have warned me.
(Jimbo blows on his hands and rubs them together. He sits back down on the stool but before he can attempt to milk Winnie, she knocks over the bucket with her foot).
Jimbo (to Winnie) What did you do that for? I’ve warmed my hands.
(Jimbo collects the bucket and replaces the bucket under Winnie. He sits back down but Winnie kicks the bucket away again. Not pleased Jimbo gets up collects the bucket and puts it back.)
Jimbo (to Winnie) Stop that!
(Again Winnie kicks away the bucket. Jack & Dame Spriggott snigger. Getting fed up Jimbo retrieves the bucket and again puts it under Winnie but before he even has a chance to sit down, the bucket is kicked away.)
Jimbo (throwing his hands in the air) Oh this is ridiculous. Winnie’s not playing fair at all.
Dame No, but she’s playing you for a fool.
Jimbo I give up. (Childish sulking) I don’t want to milk the cow. It’s too hard.
Dame I think we really need to think about selling Winnie before she gets any older. At least now we’d get a fair price for her.
Jack (hugs Winnie) You can’t sell her, I won’t let you!
